What is Solitaire?

Solitaire — also known as Patience in British English — is one of the most iconic and enduring single-player card games in history. Played with a standard 52-card deck, the goal is to sort all cards into four foundation piles, organized by suit from Ace through King. Simple to learn yet deeply strategic, Solitaire has captivated players across generations.

The game's origins trace back to 18th-century Northern Europe, likely Scandinavia or Germany, where it was known as a form of fortune-telling as well as entertainment. By the 19th century, it had spread throughout France and Britain, becoming a popular pastime in aristocratic circles. When Microsoft bundled Solitaire with Windows 3.0 in 1990 — originally to teach users how to use a mouse — it became the most-played computer game in history, with billions of sessions logged worldwide.

Today, Solitaire remains a beloved classic, enjoyed by over 35 million people every month. At HeadlinesB, we bring you the original Klondike Solitaire experience, completely free and playable instantly in your browser.

How to Play Solitaire

The version you're playing is Klondike Solitaire, the most popular variant. Here are the basic rules:

The Setup

The game begins with 28 cards dealt into 7 tableau columns. The first column has 1 card face-up, the second has 2 cards (1 face-up), and so on through 7 columns. The remaining 24 cards form the stockpile in the top-left corner.

The Objective

Build four foundation piles (top-right area), one per suit, from Ace to King: A → 2 → 3 → ... → K. When all 52 cards are in the foundations, you win!

Benefits of Playing Solitaire

Beyond pure entertainment, Solitaire offers several cognitive and psychological benefits that make it a genuinely rewarding pastime:

5 Tips to Win at Solitaire

1

Always move Aces and Twos to foundations immediately. There's almost never a reason to keep an Ace or 2 on the tableau — move them to the foundation as soon as they appear.

2

Expose face-down cards first. Prioritize moves that flip hidden tableau cards face-up. More visible cards means more options and better strategic choices.

3

Don't empty a column unless you have a King ready. Empty columns are powerful — but only if you can immediately fill them with a King to start a new sequence.

4

Think before you draw from the stock. Check all possible tableau and foundation moves before drawing. Drawing prematurely can lock you into bad sequences.

5

Keep foundations balanced. Try not to advance one foundation suit too far ahead of others. You may need lower-ranked cards from one suit to build onto another.
